De son côté, Kirill Aleksenkoo se rebellait également et remportait une belle victoire contre Anish Giri, qui permet au Russe de ne pas porter la lanterne rouge. Et comme Fabiano Caruana ne parvenait pas à battre Girschuk, MVL se hisse à la deuxième place du tournoi après sa victoire contre Wang Hao, complètement à côté de la plaque depuis trois rondes.
