Le Français aurait pu en profiter pour prendre seul le commandement au classement général. Finalement, il partage toujours cette place avec Wang Hao et Ian Nepomniachtchi. Les appariements de la cinquième ronde, qui aura lieu ce dimanche, donne peut-être une nouvelle opportunité au Français de s'installer seul en tête! Comme dans la deuxième ronde contre Nepo, Grischuk reproduit sa Défense Berlin. Surpris par le 18e coup du Français, il se laissera littéralement aller dans un zeitnot dont lui seul à le secret. MVL, qui n'a dû commencer à réfléchir que vers le 22e coup, avait alors une belle opportunité. Celle-ci se matérialiait au 30e coup, mais le Français passait à côté.

Caruana introduit au 20e coup une nouveauté dans la Grünfeld par rapport à la partie entre Vlastimil Hort et Maia Chiburdanidze jouée en 1987. Il s'ensuivit une finale de ♕♛ qui semblait a priori supérieure aux Blancs, mais soudain, il s'avéra que c'est eux qui luttaient pour la nulle!

Ding Liren obtient sa première nulle du tournoi! Le petit plus qu'il obtenait, contre un Giri une fois plus très bien préparé, n'était pas suffisant pour espérer plus.

Pour une fois dans ce tournoi, Alekseenko réussit à surprendre son adversaire dans l'ouverture. Wang Hao décidait dès lors de jouer solide, avant d'essayer de profiter du choix étrange du Russe au 13e coup. Mais là aussi, l'avantage obtenu s'avérait insuffisant pour espérer mieux que la nulle.
