Alekseenko ½:½ Vachier-Lagrave

Pour la deuxième journée consécutive, MVL a pu préserver ses forces en confrontant son adversaire à une position qu'il a longuement étudiée à la maison et approfondi dans tous ses interstices. Par contre, comme le soulignait le Français à l'interview, il aimerait bien que les organisateurs déposent un jeu dans la salle de repos lorsqu'il doit attendre près d'une heure jusqu'à ce que son adversaire daigne trouver la suite qui tient contre sa préparation.

C'est a peu près le temps investi par Alekseenko au 18e coup. Il a alors trouvé une variante dont MVL savait à l'avance qu'elle conduisait forcément à une perpétuelle.

Nepomniachtchi 1:0 Wang Hao

Déjà en difficulté contre Grischuk avec la Petroff, Wang Hao perd le match au sommet de la cinquième ronde en persistant à utiliser la pourtant réputée solide Défense Russe. La nouveauté introduite par Nepo au 13e coup relativement à une partie jouée entre Anand et Yu Yangyi a manifestement déstabilisé le Chinois. Le Russe mettait la pression, mais Wang Hao semblait toutefois trouver les ressources pour tenir. Jusqu'au 32e coup, où il finissait par commettre une erreur fatale. Dépité, le tombeur de Ding Liren et jusqu'ici coleader jetait l'éponge étonnamment tôt.

Une fois encore, Giri sort de l'ouverture avec une belle position sans parvenir à concrétiser son avantage, qu'il perdra définitivement au 33e coup.
