Jan-Henric Buettner, le visionnaire à l'origine du Freestyle G.O.A.T. Challenge organisé au début de l'année, a annoncé que Magnus Carlsen et Fabiano Caruana s'affronteront dans un match d'échecs freestyle à Singapour. Cette exhibition aura lieu quelques jours avant le championnat du monde d'échecs classiques entre Ding Liren et Dommaraju Gukesh. Buettner a fait cette annonce lors d'une conversation exclusive avec Sagar Shah, de ChessBase India, ajoutant ainsi une nouvelle intrigue à ce qui s'annonce déjà comme une période palpitante pour le monde des échecs.
Au début du mois, la nouvelle société de Buettner, Freestyle Chess Operations GmbH, a dévoilé les trois premières dates et lieux du Grand Chelem d'échecs freestyle de 2025. Ces développements soulignent l'engagement de M. Buettner à promouvoir le jeu d'échecs freestyle, également connu sous le nom de chess960 ou Fischer Random. En organisant ce match très médiatisé à Singapour, Buettner vise à faire découvrir ce format à un public plus large, en s'appuyant sur le pouvoir des stars Carlsen et Caruana, deux des figures les plus importantes des échecs modernes et rivaux pour le championnat du monde en 2018.
Carlsen est depuis longtemps partisan de changements dans les compétitions d'échecs, réclamant souvent des cadences plus rapides et favorisant les tournois en ligne. Son enthousiasme pour la vision de Buettner est évident, surtout après avoir aidé à collecter $12 millions pour le Grand Chelem 2025. La première édition du Freestyle G.O.A.T. Challenge a vu la victoire de Carlsen, dont le surnom «G.O.A.T.» fait directement référence à son statut de plus grand joueur de tous les temps dans le monde des échecs.
Le championnat du monde d'échecs classiques entre Ding Liren et Dommaraju Gukesh se déroulera du 25 novembre au 13 décembre au Resorts World Sentosa à Singapour. Fait remarquable, Google a été confirmé en tant que sponsor principal de l'événement, ce qui confère encore plus de prestige à ce match très attendu.
