Après 18 coups de théorie, les protagonistes se trouvaient évidemment dans une position égale. Magnus Carlsen démontrait cependant qu'il restait un rien d'initiative aux Blancs, et exploitait une fois de plus ce microscopique avantage de manière prodigieuse, au point d'obtenir une position gagnante. Mais tout à coup la machine à gagner s'enraya et le Norvégien dut se contenter de la nulle.
I. Nepomniachtchi 1-0 F. Caruana
Le coup de poker de Nepomniachtchi a fini par payé! Face à la Sveshnikov de Carlsen adopté aujourd'hui par Caruana, il jouait la variante préférée de l'Américain avec les Blancs (7.♘d5). Il est vrai que si Caruana joue ce coup avec les Blancs, c'est qu'il doit penser que c'est le meilleur pour ceux-ci. D'un autre côté, c'est une position dont il connaît profondément toutes les finesses - pour les deux côtés! Ce que le challenger 2018 démontra. Sur son terrain, il prit l'ascendant sur le Russe, puis se lança dans une entreprise tactique impressionnante pour décider de la partie. Malheureusement pour lui, il commit une imprécision qui ne pardonne pas dans ce genre de situation. Nepo empoche son deuxième point en deux parties et prend la tête en solitaire au classement provisoire.
Ding Liren ½-½ S. Karjakin
Le troisième joueur du tournoi à plus de 2800 Elo dominait l'ancien challenger suite à un sacrifice de qualité plutôt inattendu. Mais Ding Liren manquait finalement le coup stratégique gagnant dans une position particulièrement complexe.
Les trois autres parties - Aronian vs Giri, So vs Vachier-Lagrave et Nakamura vs Mamedyarov - se terminaient sur des nulles sans émotions.
