(Préférable aurait été 32.♖g5). Les Noirs ne peuvent pas prendre à cause de 33.♕b8+. Mais après 32...g6 33.♜f6, les carottes sont cuites: 33...♞d3 34.♕c3 (car sinon 34...♛e5 est décisif) 35...♜xd7 ohne Schaden. 36.♖e6 ♛f4 et abandon.
Face à Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Carlsen, avec les Blancs, n'hésita pas à entrer dans la variante fétiche du Français. Si celui-ci semblait tenir l'équilibre dans cette Najdorf, la finale de pièces lourdes tourna finalement à l'avantage du Scandinave.
Avec 38.e5, Carlsen s'ouvre le chemin pour menacer le ♚. 38...dxe5 39.♜d5.

L'Américain vécu cependant une déconvenue inattendue lors de la 5e ronde. Il s'inclina contre Bassem Amin, qui avait encaissé 4 défaites en 4 parties jusque-là!
La victoire de l'Egyptien est méritée. Nakamura perdit d'abord son ♟ de plus dans une finale de double ♖♜+♘♞, puis il s'avéra que les ♙ étaient plus dangereux que les ♟.
L'Américain manqua toutefois une finesse qui lui aurait permis d'annuler:
Nakamura sacrifia une de ses ♜ contre un ♙ très avancé et chercha une compensation avec ses deux ♟ passés. Et il y avait effectivement une ressource avec 71...♞d2 72.♔e1 ♞e4, par exemple: 73.♖g8 ♚f7 74.♘xe4 ♚xg8. La finale ♖♘ contre ♜ est assure en général la nulle. Mais l'Américain joua 71...♚f5.
