Le Norvégien obtint une position de rêve dès l'ouverture contre Anand, sans parvenir toutefois à faire craquer l'Indien. MVL prit des risques énormes contre Naiditsch, mais dut se contenter de la nulle. Et les spectateurs n'ont pas été déçus: après plus de 6½ heures de manœuvres pleines de rebondissements, le n°1 mondial finissait par prendre la mesure de l'espoir Allemand.
