MVL sera opposé en quart de finale au vainqueur du match Nakamura-Topalov, Mamedyarov à celui du match Svidler-Duda. Les tiebreaks débutent cet après-midi à CEST 14h.
Navara - MVL ½
David Navara opta pour une Rossolimo (3.♗b5+ après 1.e4 c5 2.♘f3 d6), évitant ainsi un débat théorique dans la Najdorf. Refuser cette confrontation contre l'expert MVL est certes compréhensible, mais en même temps le Tchèque avait besoin d'une victoire, et cela ne va pas sans assumer les complications.
MVL adopta une stratégie solide, mettant de côté toutes les difficultés tactiques et provoquant un maximum d'échanges.
Les ♕♛ ne sont déjà plus sur l'échiquier, et les Noirs acceptent de renoncer à la paire de ♝♗ pour simplifier encore la position par 23...♝xe4.

Dubov - Mamedyarov 0-1
Dubov et Mamedyarov suivaient jusqu'au 18e coup une Grünfeld jouée par deux GM à 2400 Elo. L'Azéri proposa au 10e coup déjà la nulle. Lorsque Dubov lui rendit la pareille au 22e coup, Shak avait repris goût au jeu.
Après l'échange des ♕♛ 22...♛xe6+ 23.dxe6, Mamedyarov activait ses pièces: 23...g5 24.♗e3 ♚g7 25.g4 ♜fd8. Débutèrent alors les manœuvres pour essayer de valoriser la majorité à l'Aile-♛.
Au 36e coup, Mamedyarov gagnait finalement le ♙e6 et parvenait à conserver ce ♟ d'avance.
La finale après 41.♖xg4 n'est pas absolument gagnante pour les Noirs. Mais Mamedyarov tenait son os, et lorsque son ♟a se mit en marche, Dubov se résigna à s'avouer vaincu.

Duda - Svidler ½
Le Russe passa un certain temps au 5e coup déjà pour décider de quelle sorte d'Est-Indienne il allait user pour combattre son adversaire polonais. Mais c'est ce dernier qui sortit mieux des complications qui s'ensuivirent.
Après 21.♕a1, Svidler n'a rien de mieux que 21...♞eg8. Mais il n'est pas facile pour Duda de convertir son avantage positionnel en quelque chose de tangible.
Au lieu de 27.fxg3, le Polonais aurait dû jouer 27.♘xg3, gardant la colonne 'g' ouverte. Maintenant, Svidler parvient à se maintenir.
